Speech and language therapy can only be provided by qualified speech and language therapists.

How can one become a speech and language therapist in Hong Kong? Generally, there are two options:

1. Graduate from a bachelor’s/master’s degree program accredited by the Hong Kong Association of Speech Therapists (HKAST)
2. Graduate from an overseas speech therapy program accredited by an overseas association

Patients and their families can verify their therapist by looking up the membership list of the Hong Kong Association of Speech Therapists. The Association maintains a register of approved speech therapists in Hong Kong and ensures that its registered members are fit to practise based on rigorous assessment standards and are accredited under the Department of Health’s Recognised Medical Professional Registration Scheme.

Parents can also search for suitable therapists through the Hong Kong Association of Speech Therapists (HKAST) network. Of course, in addition to verifying the therapist’s identity, you should also pay attention to their qualifications when choosing a therapist.
